Berlin, 23 July 2025 – Pepco Group N.V. (“Pepco” and, together with its subsidiaries, “Pepco Group” or the “Group”), a leading pan-European variety discount retailer is seeking to reorganize its German store network. To this end, Pepco Germany GmbH (“Pepco Germany”) yesterday filed for insolvency proceedings under Section 270 of the German Insolvency Code at the Berlin-Charlottenburg Local Court (the “Court”). The Court has subsequently ordered provisional company-led realignment proceedings (known as “Protective Shield Proceedings”).
Pepco Germany operates 64 stores across Germany, with a focus on Eastern Germany. Pepco’s stores offer clothing and general merchandise for the whole family at affordable prices. After entering the market in 2022, the German store network has experienced challenges and uneven development and is currently operating at an overall loss. Pepco Germany currently employs approximately 500 people in total.
The aim of the proceedings is to realign Pepco Germany for the German market and to better position it for potential success over time. All stores will remain open until further notice and will continue to be supplied with the latest collections. Pepco Group, as shareholder, has declared its willingness to support the restructuring process and secure financing for the proceedings.
The existing management will be supported in the proceedings by Christian Stoffler from the Munich law firm Gerloff Liebler Rechtsanwälte, who has been appointed as Chief Restructuring Office (CRO). Stoffler has many years of extensive experience, particularly in the fashion and retail sectors. The Court has appointed lawyer Dr Gordon Geiser, partner at GT GreenbergTraurig LLP, Berlin, as provisional trustee (Sachwalter) in the proceedings, who will monitor compliance with the law.
Christian Stoffler, CRO, comments: “Over the past 20 years, Pepco Group has proven that its retail concept and its product range are successful in Europe. We therefore see good opportunities to realign the store network in Germany so that it can prosper, despite the challenging German retail market. The Company-led realignment procedure gives us the opportunity to implement the necessary measures quickly.”
